The Brent Under-9 Girls squad formed out of FA Wildcats sessions put on a magnificent performance against Regents Park Spartans. The Spartans had won a previous encounter 8-0 so this match was always going to be a tough test for Brent’s youngest squad.
Brent started brightly and piled pressure on to the Regents Park defence. Their attacking intent was rewarded when Evie Pillar scored with an unstoppable cross shot into the roof of the net.
Brent then went close again, helped by Deena who was having an outstanding debut in midfield and fired just wide. Brent also went close on two further occasions but on each occasion, shots rolled agonisingly inches past the post. Spartans went on the attack but Romy in goal made a fine save, supported by Ruby and Myla who were superb in defence.
Spartans equalised, then began to push for the win. Both teams fought bravely a decisive goal before a late stoppage changed the course of the match. A minute from time, a dog ran onto the pitch and caused the game to be stopped. There was some confusion within the Brent ranks at the restart and Spartans were able to capitalise on that, scoring with the last kick of the game.
Despite this, Brent coach Doug Cooper remained positive: “What a brilliant game. The whole team contributed and played well. They are improving every week. I am very proud of them.”
