On Saturday, Brent Schools’ FA fielded the youngest ever side to represent the Borough in the 50+ year history of the association when an Under-9 girls’ team took to the field for their first match.
Supported by The Wembley National Stadium Trust and in line with The FA’s efforts to increase female participation, Brent now boast four girls teams; the newly-formed Under-9 Girls, plus squads at U11, U13 and U14.
Brent were one of the original FA girls football ‘Wildcats’ centres and are leading the way in girls district football in Middlesex. The original Wildcats centre led to the formation of the current Under-14 team that previously won the Regent’s Park Youth League ‘treble’.
The most recent addition to the Brent football family, the newly formed Under-9 girls side (pictured above) play in the Regent’s Park Youth League. The youngsters played their first ever fixture on Saturday against United Dragons. In a fun and competitive game played in a great, sporting spirit, Dragons managed to just edge the first half going into the break with a 2-0 lead. The second half was all Brent and they scored the goal of the game when captain Georgia Margetson released Marni Keam-George down the right wing. Her cross was met by Evie Piller who blasted the ball into the corner of the net to reduce the deficit. Brent piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser, spending long periods in their opponents’ half, but though they came close could not find the equaliser.
Brent coach Chris Ampofo said: “Congratulations to the girls on a brilliant first game. They all contributed and enjoyed the experience. Thank you to United Dragons for being so sporting. The game really was great fun”.
Brent squad: Eva Armit, Edie Morgan, Evie Piller, Georgia Margetson (captain), Grace Marcon, Lois Ampofo, Marni Keam-George, Romy Lawson, Ruby Cooper, Yasmina Diab.
Any parents interested in their child joining the Brent girls football sessions which are held at the excellent facilities at Capital City Academy or would like to explore coaching opportunities with Brent Schools’ FA should email Chris.
Brent’s Under-11 and Under-13 girls teams both face Brent Cross FC at Regents Park on Saturday. The Under-9 girls face a rematch with the Dragons in their next match on October 3.
